A mother who has no food to eat and there is no one to take care of her received a relief package through the COVID Relief Effort for Afghan Communities and Households program

The 27-year-old Ahmad Gul who is now paralysed is living in a miserable living condition along with his seven family members in Yawalee Shura area. It is located at district 15 of Herat city. He is delighted for receiving a relief package of the COVID Relief Effort for Afghan Communities and Households program in a state of despair where he doesn’t have anyone else to look after him and his family.

Before that, Ahmad Gul was heading his family. One and half years ago, he fell down from a wall when he was working, being on the top of the wall. He is now bedridden. In the hope that he will get recovered, he borrowed money and went to Pakistan for his treatment but with no success. Before that, Ahmad Gul was the head of his family. He  was taking care of his grandmother, mother, spouse and two of his younger brothers, but he is now, he is himself in a dire need to be observed and looked after, due to his illness.

Now, his 54-years-old mother, Qamar Gul and his 16-years-old brother Shaikh Ahmad is heading his family. His brother is working as daily-wage worker.  On the other hand, his mother Qamar Gul works in a factory that is cleaning animal’s wools. They hardly earn AFN 300 in one week that hardly meets their needs. After the outbreak of coronavirus and because of lockdown, the problems of his family has gone up. They are not getting food most of the times. Also, they have no fuel or woods to heat up their house in the winter time. Even their house floor is furnished with plastic.

When they were interviewed, it appeared that his family is happy for receiving relief packages of the COVID Relief Effort for Afghan Communities and Households program. They said that, “these aid packages are vital for us at a time of need. On one hand, we have no food to consume and no man to earn, and on the other hand, the unemployment rate is on rise, therefore, we are not concerned to feed ourselves for some time.”

COVID Relief Effort for Afghan Communities and Households program is designed by the Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to fight against negative impacts of the coronavirus in cities and rural areas of the country and alleviate the economic challenges of the people especially the vulnerable and poor classes, and the daily laborers of the society.
