Dastarkhwan-e Meli Program Officially Launched in Rural Communities

Mujib Rahman Karimi, Acting Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) inaugurated the Dastarkhwan-e Meli Program in Nangarhar province. Meanwhile, this program was officially started across the country by the senior local officials, civil society & media representatives and the public by distributing the relief packages to deserving households (HHs) under the coverage of the Citizens Charter National Priority Program of the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD/CCNPP).

The Dastarkhwan-e Meli program will cover the deserving HHs across the country in two phases. In its first phase, 1.67 million in rural and more than 175 thousand HHs in four cities will receive relief packages, worth AFN 4,000 which include food and non-food items e.g. flour, rice, cooking oil, red beans, chickpeas and soap. Dastarkhwan-e Meli program is designed to cover more than five million HHs as a whole both at rural and urban level in all 34 provinces.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in negative economic impacts on the lives of people, especially the poor & daily wage-earners in Afghanistan. Thus, the Government of Afghanistan initiated a relief response program, called Dastarkhwan-e Meli that is implemented in rural and urban areas; aiming at fighting these negative impacts. This program will be implemented by the Community Development Councils (CDCs), Gozar Assemblies (GAs), Gozar Councils (GCs) and ad-hoc CDCs throughout Afghanistan.
